Individual Rights
In the Declaration of Independence, our nation’s Founders affirmed that “all men are created equal” and that “they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights and that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” If elected, I will work to defend these values.
Equality – I oppose discrimination on the basis of race, gender, color, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. All Americans should be seen as equal in the eyes of the law.
Abortion – I am the only pro-life candidate running for Congress in Virginia’s 8th District.
Second Amendment – I support the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which recognized that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. In Congress, I will vote to defend the Second Amendment rights of Americans.
Property Rights – I disagree with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Kelo v. City of New London, which held that the government may use its eminent domain powers to take property from one individual and give it to another private individual or company. The Court’s decision runs directly counter to the Fifth Amendment’s admonition that private property “be taken for public use.” I therefore support legislation that would prohibit the federal government from seizing private property through eminent domain and giving it to other private parties (who often happen to be politically well-connected). I also favor legislation that would forbid any local governments from engaging in such takings of property if they receive federal economic development funds.
Free Speech - We must be vigilant in defending the First Amendment rights of all Americans. I therefore oppose the revival of the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which represents an attempt to silence the voices of those on talk radio. I also oppose attempts to restrict the ability of citizens to participate in the electoral process under the guise of campaign finance reform.
